Because of nuclear-powered submarines serious quantity increase in Northern Fleet and technical and science development, the pressing need of all-year repair, technical support and modernization in the places of vessel's location had appeared. That's why the USSR government has accepted on 8 September 1964 the project of shiprepair enterprise construction on the area of non-freezing Kut bay of Kola gulf. To carry out this project the personnel of Severvoenmorstroy NF was enlicted. In 1966 the enterprise, that was still under construction, has got it's name - Shiprepair Yard "Nerpa" and was included to the structure of 1 Head Department of Minsudprom USSR, and since September 1968 - to 12 Head Department of Minsudprom USSR. SRY "Nerpa" has started its activity in 1970. Since 1980 the enterprise has been carrying out all necessary works to satisfy needs of NF in the field of nuclear-powered submarines repair and modernization. During 20 years, almost till the beginning of 90-th, the main direction of activity was Navy ships and submarines repair, and the industrial structure was created to provide proper work execution. From 1970, more than 30 nuclear-powered submarines and number of other vessels were repaired at SRY "Nerpa". For successful work in the field of military readiness and safety increase of Northern Fleet, a great number of engineering and working personnel were highly regarded. Since its foundation SRY "Nerpa" was headed by: M.V. Irkhin, A.E. Vavilov, V.V Murko, V.I. Velichansky. Since 1989 the enterprise has been headed by P.G. Steblin.
